BBC News - East Sussex Hospitals use ozone to beat superbugs

East Sussex hospitals are using nature’s most powerful disinfectant to raise hygiene standards and combat superbugs such as Clostridium difficile (C.diff) and MRSA.

Conquest Hospital in St Leonard’s on Sea and the Eastbourne District General Hospital have become the first hospitals in the region to use a revolutionary system which recreates the thunderstorm effect and injects ozone into the wash process to disinfect contaminated laundry – a common source of cross infection in healthcare environments.

Stuart Barnhill, Assistant Director of Facilities at East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, said, “This new cleaning system has proved to be very effective in terms of disinfection. We use around 1,250 micro-fibre mops daily across both sites. The new laundry system is very quick which has enabled us to ensure that all areas have consistently clean mops every day. “
